Water is perhaps our most precious, but abused, resource and is one of West Michigan Environmental Action Council’s driving issues. Join us and the Wealthy Theatre on Wednesday, February 8 for the second film of our series, Blue Gold: World Water Wars. This time the screening will take place in the Microcinema and admission is free, with a suggested donation of $5. Doors are at 6:30pm, film starts at 7pm.
Blue Gold is based on the book of the same title by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke. It explores “the rampant overdevelopment of agriculture, housing and industry” that is slowly increasing the demand for fresh water “well beyond the finite supply.” Numerous experts, like Vandana Shiva and Michal Kravcik, give their input throughout the film on water issues.
Lynna Kaucheck of Food and Water Watch will be on hand to offer her insight on water issues in a discussion during the film’s intermission. The discussion will focus on the local water system and Fifteen to the River, a collaborative effort between WMEAC and the City of Grand Rapids to educate residents in the Grand River Watershed about the threat of stormwater runoff. Lynna Kaucheck of Food and Water Watch will also be on hand to offer her insight on water issues. As a Great Lakes state, Michigan has a special responsibility towards the world’s largest surface fresh water system. What can we do to protect and conserve this vital resource for the future?
